Sustainable Clean Beauty Brands to Keep an Eye On

The spotlight is shining increasingly brighter on clean beauty as more consumers learn about harmful, non-regulated ingredients that are in their everyday products. Many people don’t realize the benefits of clean beauty until they are pregnant or are diagnosed with a health condition. Although clean beauty has taken leaps within the past several years, something to note is that clean beauty is not always “sustainable” beauty.

There are a few companies that are leading the way in sustainability for clean products and we’ve rounded up a few of our favorites.

KJAER WEIS

Kjaer Weis was founded on the principle that your health doesn’t need to be sacrificed by using synthetic makeup.

Kirsten Kjaer Weis saw a space and market that wasn’t being met and decided to create a brand where organic makeup can be as high performance as other established competitors in the market. Kjaer Weis is the definition of sustainable luxury. They ensure consumers are getting Certified Natural or Certified Organic products wrapped in sustainable packaging. The compacts and tubes are a heavy-weight metal, meant to last, and can be easily refilled with your favorite KW products.

Sustainable Practices:

  • The Intelligent Refill System: The Kjaer Weis compacts were created to be used again and again, so when it’s time to purchase more of your favorite product, you simply purchase a refill of the product. You place the new product inside of the refillable packaging and the new product’s carton can be recycled.

  • The Red Edition: Red packaging designed to have a leather look but is made of high gloss textured red paper. This packaging is 100% recyclable, compostable, and refillable.

  • All Kjaer Weis makeup is free of parabens, silicones, petrochemical emulsifiers and synthetic fragrance.

  • Certified Natural or Certified Organic

ILIA BEAUTY

Ilia believes in skin that looks like skin (but better).

Their fuss-free philosophy of skincare powered makeup has never made makeup easier. Loaded with clean, multi-use products, Ilia is perfect for the consumer on-the-go.

Sustainable Practices:

  • Packaging made from recycled aluminum, glass components, and responsibly sourced paper.

  • TerraCycle Zero Waste Box: All customers can mail up to 5 beauty products per month (Ilia products or ANY other brand) and TerraCycle will break the containers down responsibly so they don’t end up in a landfill.

LOLI BEAUTY

LOLI Beauty is stirring up a clean and conscious change with their zero waste superfood beauty products.

They believe that beauty starts from the inside out, so LOLI uses pure, potent, food-grade ingredients that are hand selected and responsibly sourced.

Sustainable Practices:

  • Packaged in food-grade glass yogurt jars that can be reused for food or anywhere around the house.

  • Certified compostable labels, bags, and boxes.

  • Only organic, locally grown, non-GMO, raw or up-cycled food grade ingredients.

  • Ethically cultivated, mindfully made.

LINNE BOTANICALS

Linne Botanicals presents a relaxed, trust-worthy, natural skincare line made of all-natural botanical compounds from ethically harvested ingredients.

They believe in total transparency with efforts ranging from clear packaging, revealing the color and texture of each product, to including use by dates, to ensure freshness and efficacy.

Sustainable Practices:

  • The packaging boxes use a mix of post-consumer waste paper and Forest Stewardship Council certified paper printed with soy-based inks.

  • Use of clear glass packaging because it can be recycled and is more accepted by recycling plants than colored glass.

  • Shower friendly packaging made from BPA-free PET plastic. PET plastic is the most widely accepted form of recyclable plastic and also has a smaller footprint than recycling glass.
