Your Guide to Nontoxic Fall Fashion

Why Nontoxic Fashion Matters
Fall is the season for layering, investing in high-quality staples, and curating a wardrobe that lasts beyond trends. Choosing timeless, well-crafted pieces not only elevates your style but also protects your health and the environment. Many clothes today are made with synthetics and toxic dyes that don’t wear well and end up in landfills. By selecting garments made from natural materials and produced in regulated regions, you’re building a wardrobe that is cleaner, longer-lasting, and far more sustainable.
Karmen Berentsen, founder of A Line Boutique and Jaclyn Tracy, the founder of SISTAIN share tips to live a more nontoxic life in this interview on A Line Stories.
Where It’s Made
The origin of your clothing matters. Countries like Italy, France, and Spain uphold strict environmental and textile standards—regulating pesticides, dyes, and production methods. Clothing made in these regions is generally cleaner, safer, and longer-lasting.
What It’s Made Of
Choose Natural |
Avoid Synthetic |
Organic Cotton |
Polyester (all forms) |
Linen |
Nylon |
Wool |
Acrylic |
Cashmere |
Spandex/Elastane |
Silk |
Poly-blends |
Leather & Suede |
“Vegan Leather” (usually plastic-based) |
Our Stance on Leather & Suede: When responsibly sourced, leather and suede are durable, long-lasting materials that age beautifully. Unlike plastic-based “vegan leather,” which cracks and sheds microplastics, natural hides biodegrade and last decades—making them the nontoxic choice.
How to Read a Label
Labels are your best guide to understanding what you’re putting on your body.
Look for 100% natural fibers (cashmere, silk, wool, linen, organic cotton).
Check origin: Pieces made in Italy, France, or Spain typically adhere to higher safety and environmental standards.
Certifications matter: GOTS, OEKO-TEX, and Fair Trade are strong indicators of lower-toxicity and ethical practices.
Watch out for synthetics: Polyester, spandex/elastane, nylon, and acrylic are petroleum-based and often treated with chemicals. These fabrics shed microplastics every wash, leaching into our waterways and polluting ecosystems. Synthetic fibers are also endocrine disruptors, linked to negative impacts on fertility, hormonal balance, and long-term health.
