In this interview, Andi shares insights on her creative inspirations, sustainable practices, and why her favorite mug feels like a warm hug in your hands.
What drew you to ceramics?
I had an epiphany a few years ago: I really love a good process. I realized this when looking back at college and thinking about my photography degree, pondering why I didn’t continue to pursue it…It was because I loved the physical darkroom process more than I loved taking the actual photos. This is what drew me to clay, it’s a long process of precise chemistry and beautiful imperfection.
Pottery truly is a special artform, turning literal earth into objects for everyday use. What a privilege we have as potters. I'm not sure what medium grounds an artist more to the world.
How long have you been working with ceramics?
I attended my first beginner ceramics class in 2016.
What inspires you creatively? Do you immerse yourself in other art forms?
In the beginning of my ceramics journey, I knew very little about glazes, clays and finishes so the raw minimalist aesthetic came from a lack of knowledge which is a beautiful way to start. Keeping it simple.
As my knowledge has grown over the years, I find a lot of color and form inspiration from fashion, movies and interior spaces. I like to look at trends and think about how I can spin it to create something timeless with a touch of flair.
How does sustainability or nature connect to your work?
Pottery truly is a special artform; turning literal earth into objects for everyday use. What a privilege we have as potters. I'm not sure what medium grounds and connects an artist more to nature.
How do you approach your art with a progress over perfection mindset?
The only way to survive this medium is to have a progress over perfection mindset. It will quickly humble the perfectionist hiding inside you and break your heart daily. There are so many steps along the way to a finished piece where things can go wrong and all your work is ruined. It’s just part of this beautiful and messy process -creating with clay.
Imperfection is what brings soul to handmade pottery.
What are your favorite ceramic pieces of the ANDI x SISTAIN collection & why?
I love the Jac Mug. The little nooks for your fingers feels like a warm hug. I am a sucker for mugs without handles.
